Special Education Advocacy and Parent/Student Provider Training
As a member of the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates since 1998, I provide direct "at table advocacy" at IEP Team and other special education and Section 504 Kindergarten through twelfth grade meetings, plus transition team meetings. Prior to any meeting with school officials and providers, I conduct a family assessment to determine the level of support for the student's need within the family and the family's need for outside help.
Advocacy involves:
- Review of complete student's educational records (all sources)
- Helping parents organize their records
- Preparation of correspondence and training parents to do a "Parent Report"
- Coaching parents in the art of negotiation and collaborative problem solving
- Consulting with parents and providers over strategy and tactics "for the long haul"
- If needed, private educational case management and surrogate representation
- Assisting special education attorneys with details of a Due Process case
